Sustainable development is a key phase of the 21st century. In the past, college was considered an ivory tower for its isolation with the community and society. Lately, the relationship between the two has been improved greatly. Especially after the educational reform, the number of college increased tremendously, and colleges has played a crucial role in the integrated community development. These well-designed college towns under the concept of sustainable development not just can unite college and community culturally, but also can promote the development of the community. In this study, Nan Hua University of Dalin was used to demonstrate how a sustainable college town would be formed through an integrated community development and triple bottom line perspectives. And in order for the planning can really agree with the needs of local people, a questionnaire was designed and distributed to the residents of Dalin to understand what they think an ideal Dalin college town looks like. Based on the results of the questionnaire, the factor analysis was applied to extract the five most important factors of establishing a sustainable college town, they are to enhance the industrial competitiveness and establish good relationship with local community; to draw up the community educational program and mold the community culture; to carry out pollution abatement program and make environmental protection activities known; to share resources of all different schools and build up environmental database, and to improve the living quality and implement the environmental education. It is believed that the results of this study could be used as referral for establishing other sustainable college town in Taiwan. |
